Automatic train protection and odometry

Precise distance and speed acquisition

  • Highly integrated multi-channel rotary encoders as axle encoders or in pick-up configuration for scanning existing measuring scales
  • Galvanically isolated signal groups for interference-free supply of multiple systems with speed information
  • Solutions for particularly demanding safety requirements such as ETCS and CBTC

Why speed and distance measurement is crucial for ETCS and CBTC

Speed acquisition and distance acquisition are indispensable for ETCS and CBTC, as they form the basis for accurate determination of velocity and position. Only with reliable odometry can braking curves be calculated correctly and speeds monitored continuously.

Interference factors such as slip, sliding or wheel wear can distort measured values, thereby increasing safety margins. In ETCS, this leads to more conservative headways and can have a noticeable impact on line capacity.

In CBTC, precise acquisition enables short train headways, exact platform stopping accuracy and safe door release in automated operation.

Our many years of experience in handling safety-related functions makes us the right partner for your demanding projects. Get in touch with us!

Odometry – Precise distance and speed acquisition

Our sensors provide high-precision signals that enable reliable acquisition of the distance traveled in rail transport. This forms the basis for systems that capture speed and position in real time. The high signal quality and maximum availability provide the foundation for accurate results.

Axle encoders and multi-channel rotary encoders for safety-critical applications

Our axle encoder with integrated cold movement detection (CMD) function captures movements of the wheel axle in the de-energized state and, upon restoration of the operating voltage, provides verified information as to whether the vehicle has been moved. If no movement has been detected, the train can immediately return to line service with a valid position, without first having to pass over a balise.

The battery-free, low-maintenance solution is ideal for rail vehicles to be equipped with an on-board European Train Control System (ETCS) including cold movement detection in accordance with Baseline 3 – both for retrofits and new vehicles.

Multi-system sensors meet increasing requirements for train protection systems

Our multi-system sensor enables existing freight rail lines to be used for public transit as well. To meet the increased requirements for train protection, various signal patterns have been combined in a compact flange housing.

The space-saving sensor is suitable for both new vehicles and retrofits, as it makes optimal use of the available installation space. This helps improve connectivity between suburban areas and city centers – as demonstrated in the German city of Bremen.
