Challenges in woodworking – reliable automation under demanding conditions

Automation with sensors and positioning drives plays a central role in woodworking. It makes plants efficient and competitive, from forestry technology to downstream industries. The demands on the technology are high. Dust and wood chips can impair sensors and electronics. Sawing, milling, and planing cause vibrations. Fluctuating humidity and temperature add further stress.

Automation solutions must therefore be immune to interference and durable. Only then can they ensure continuous, low-maintenance operation. Our robust, non-contact sensors and reliable SeGMo positioning drives enable trouble-free operation.

Tight tolerances in material processing also require precise, reliable positioning. Positioning drives make it possible to set dimensions reproducibly.

Are you looking for a Condition Monitoring solution? Then protect your system with our smart sensor solutions. The MiniOBSERVER GEL MIO10 and our CombiCODER GEL 2475CM set new standards for integrated monitoring of machining processes.

Robust sensors for forestry machines

Harvesters fell trees using the cut-to-length method. The logs are cut to the required lengths directly in the forest. The length is measured in the harvester head by a target wheel. Its teeth dig into the log, which prevents slip. A target wheel sits on the same shaft as the measuring wheel, inside a protective housing. A sensor scans it without contact.

Installation space is limited here. Compact speed sensors such as the GEL 248 and the GEL SEI10 are therefore used. Integrated direction detection enables precise length measurement even when logs move forward and backward during delimbing. The measured values are used for quantity logging, among other things. The non-contact, magnetic measuring system is designed specifically for harsh forestry conditions. Sensor and electronics are potted in a robust zinc die-cast housing, so they are shock- and vibration-resistant. They operate reliably in changing climatic conditions.

Exact cutting dimensions at the push of a button with positioning drives

Efficient cutting processes require width and length stops in woodworking machines to be adjusted quickly and precisely.

Automation with SeGMo positioning drives ensures high process reliability here. The cutting dimensions of boards and panels can be set exactly and reproducibly. This enables fast format changes, high dimensional accuracy, and efficient cutting with minimal staffing.

Sensors for maximum precision and reliability in woodworking spindles

Our MiniCODER GEL 2444 and GEL 2449 accurately capture speed, direction of rotation, position, and angle. This ensures precise cuts, milling, and drilling in woodworking. They handle rapid speed changes and high accelerations with ease. They operate reliably despite dust, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.

They can be integrated into the spindle to save space. Because they scan the measuring scale without contact, they are completely maintenance-free. This secures the highest machining quality, reduces unplanned downtime, and increases the efficiency of your machines – simple, reliable, and cost-effective.
