Sensors and controls for pitch adjustment in wind turbines

  • Robust, weatherproof compact controllers for reliable positioning of rotor blades
  • High-resolution sensors for precise acquisition of blade position – also as a redundant system
  • Decades of field experience – deployed in wind turbines for over 20 years

Robust solutions for the safe operation of wind turbines

Modern wind turbines operate under extreme conditions – from subtropical heat to arctic cold, in dust, salt spray, humidity and heavy vibrations. And this around the clock, 365 days a year. Reliability is critical to avoid costly maintenance.

Rely on our robust controllers and sensors for the safe operation of your installation. Over 50,000 of our pitch controllers are deployed worldwide – benefit from proven system solutions and decades of experience!

Controller for rotor blade position control – configurable on-site

To optimize pitch speed and achieve maximum energy yield, the rotor blades must be positioned with precision. Our controller GEL 8400 has proven itself in this demanding application and is optimized for the harsh environmental conditions and extreme temperature fluctuations in the rotor hub.

The integrated display allows your service technicians to operate the unit directly in the hub with ease. System parameters can be configured on-site via menu-guided operation. Our service tools for reading and writing parameters significantly simplify commissioning and maintenance. Firmware updates can be performed from the control room without removing the device. All relevant system parameters are logged, transmitted and visualized, enabling you to monitor the condition of your installation.

Acquiring blade position – the basis for reliable pitch adjustment

For the control system to know the current position of a rotor blade, the exact blade position must be continuously acquired. On this basis, the controller can precisely actuate the pitch drive and set the desired angle.

Use high-resolution, robust sensors with a magnetic measuring system for precise acquisition of the blade position. These withstand extreme ambient temperatures, humidity, dirt, condensation and heavy vibrations without difficulty.

When installation space in the pitch motor is limited, we recommend our compact bearingless rotary encoders GEL 248. These contactlessly scan a measuring gear connected to the motor shaft. By deploying a second sensor, a redundant system can be realized.
